Tetsuya Yamagami, 41, who will be remembered as the man who shot and killed Shinzo Abe, did not intend to attack the former Japanese prime minister, according to police sources.

Yamagami, who did not attempt to flee after shooting Abe twice from close range with a handmade shotgun, told police that he intended to attack the leader of a religious group that he believed had robbed his mother.

Yamagami attacked Abe because he claimed the two-time ex-prime minister had encouraged this group within the country. Yamagami acknowledged visiting further venues where Abe spoke.

Yamagami has denied attacking Abe over his political ideas, according to police sources who spoke to a Japanese news outlet.

Shortly after he was arrested on Friday, Nara police raided Yamagami’s home and discovered improvised explosives and firearms. The suspect was a member of his country’s Maritime Self-Defense Force from 2003 to 2005, according to a Japanese news source.

The Japanese news stated that Yamagami was unemployed at the time he attacked Abe because he was “weary.”

Shinzo Abe was shot during a campaign address in Nara, western Japan, on Friday morning.

In images taken soon after the gunshot, Abe was shown on the ground with blood on the left side of his chest.
