As tensions between Israel and Palestinian militant organizations continue to grow, the Israeli military carried out deadly attacks on what it claimed were Islamic Jihad sites in Gaza on Friday.

Tayseer Al Jabari, one of Islamic Jihad’s senior leaders, was reportedly killed in an Israeli strike, according to a statement. The organisation claimed that he served as a commander and member of its Military Council for the Quds Brigade, Islamic Jihad’s armed wing.

According to the Palestinian health ministry, at least 11 individuals were murdered, including a 23-year-old woman and 5-year-old Alaa Qadoum. There were 75 more injuries, it claimed. Israel claims the majority of the fatalities were militants.

A correspondent in Gaza witnessed medical personnel removing two dead from the Palestine Tower, a structure that had been struck by one of the missiles.

The smaller of the two main militant organizations in Gaza, Islamic Jihad, was the focus of the military action, according to a statement from the Israeli army.

According to the Israeli army, the major objectives of its military action were an airstrike on Al Jabari as a preventative measure and strikes on two anti-tank squads that were on their way to launch an attack on Israeli soldiers.

An army spokesman told reporters on a conference call Friday night that the two squads had been monitored for several days prior to the Air Force’s operation. He added that Israel had been under imminent threat for several days as the two militant units had been moving dangerously close to the fence separating Gaza from Israel.
