Former Sen. Claire McCaskill claims too many Democratic leaders are “old”
Former Missouri Senator Claire McCaskill (D) remarked on Sunday that she believes too many Democratic Party leaders are beyond their prime.
The Missourian argued on NBC’s “Meet the Press” that Democrats need to bring in new faces if they want to appeal to younger people in the future — even though the party leadership is dominated by “old guys.”
“But I will tell you that I believe the Democratic Party is grappling with a serious issue,” McCaskill, who is now an NBC News and MSNBC contributor, said during a panel discussion.
“All of our leadership — and I say this as an old person — a lot of old people are running the Democratic Party presently in every part of the Democratic Party,” she remarked.
The party’s prospects in the 2024 election, the former Democratic lawmaker argued, will hinge largely on drawing younger voters with distinct priorities.
“I think the Democratic Party will benefit from conducting some introspection about how we can bring more young people to the forefront because young people will be incredibly crucial to us in 2024,” she said.
If President Biden seeks re-election in 2024, he will be the oldest president to do so.
McCaskill, 69, who was originally elected to represent Missouri in the US Senate in 2007, was defeated in 2018 by Republican Josh Hawley, 42.
Her remarks come after a new CBSNews poll found that 73% of respondents supported age limitations for elected officials.
According to the survey, 40% favored setting an age restriction of 70, while 26% supported a limit of 60.
