The death of Queen Elizabeth II was described as a “very, very big” loss by the United States ambassador to the United Kingdom on Sunday.

“How important do you consider this loss to be?” On ABC’s “This Week,” co-anchor Martha Raddatz inquired of Jane Hartley.

“I see that as very, very significant,” Hartley said, saying that every member of her team, which is made up of Americans and Brits. When nationals learned of the monarch’s demise, they were sad.

“Everyone fell into tears instantly… she was a part of everyone’s lives,” Hartley said to Raddatz. “Everyone spoke about where they had met her or seen her since she was very much out in the community.”

President Biden nominated Hartley to be the ambassador to the United Kingdom. Earlier this year, she also discussed her encounter with the late monarch, describing the queen’s interest in global policy concerns including Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

“You never mentioned an audience with the queen, but you know, she was interested in foreign policy matters,” Hartley added.

“The United Kingdom and the United States are working so closely together, particularly on Ukraine.” She did ask a lot of questions regarding our domestic politics,” she continued. “And she was incredibly well-informed, as well as kind and friendly.”

Britain’s longest-serving queen, Queen Elizabeth II, died on Thursday at the age of 96. During Elizabeth’s 70-year reign, the United States had 14 presidents and the United Kingdom had 15 prime ministers.
