Officials said that two individuals perished in western New York after a severe winter storm dumped several feet of snow on the Buffalo area and other regions of the state.

On Friday, snowfall continued, and a lake-effect snow warning was in place until Sunday at 1 p.m. By 8 p.m., the National Weather Service reported that 5 1/2 feet of snow had fallen in Orchard Park, southeast of Buffalo.

The two fatalities were “cardiac incidents connected to exertion during shoveling/snow blowing,” according to a statement from Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz.

The weather bureau reported that at times, the snow was falling at rates of 1 to 3 inches per hour.

According to the latest reports, the stormy circumstances are among the worst that the sheriff’s deputies and public works department have ever experienced.

Some regions, notably south Buffalo, which Mayor Byron Brown described as being “very heavily struck,” had travel restrictions in effect.

43 inches of snow fell in East Aurora, and in Hamburg, the weight of the wet, heavy snow caused the roof of a Cape Cod-style home to fall, according to Poloncarz. One person was saved, but they were unharmed.

Lake-effect snow, which happens when arctic air rushes across the Great Lakes’ more temperate waters, is what the winter storm is delivering.

With snowfall rates of two to three inches per hour and a lot of “thundersnow,” which occurs when there is thunder along with snowfall, the lake-effect snow off of Lake Erie was intense on Friday.

About 30 minutes south of Buffalo, in Blasdell, Christine Scheck, who was driving through, reported that there was snow up to her hips and higher in some places.

Scheck complained, “Cars are stalled everywhere; it’s dreadful out here.” “And nobody can advance. They are simply becoming stuck.

“An ambulance is stranded in the centre of the junction. The vehicle was still stuck in the middle of the junction with the snow, and a tow truck was trying to pull them out by tying ropes underneath it and dragging them, but they were unsuccessful.

State of emergency declarations have been made in Buffalo and 11 counties in the state’s western and northwestern regions, close to Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, respectively, by Governor Kathy Hochul.
