Iowa teens who are accused of killing their high school Spanish teacher with a baseball bat will be tried as adults. This is because a judge denied their requests to move their cases to juvenile court.

Records from the Jefferson County court show that Judge Shawn Showers denied Jeremy Goodale, 17, and Willard Miller, 16, requests to get out of their sentences early. Online court documents say that both teens are being charged with first-degree murder and planning to commit a crime under duress.

The Des Moines Register says that the two are thought to have killed their Spanish teacher at Fairfield High School, Nohema Graber, with a baseball bat last year.

According to the prosecution, the two pupils followed the teacher and observed her daily habits before ambushing Graber as she was taking her daily stroll.

Graber was allegedly dragged into the woods by the two, who later came back to the area to bury her body. She was reported missing on November 2; her body was discovered the next day, and a criminal complaint was filed against the accused.

Investigators have not talked about a motive.

The judge denied Miller’s motion, stating that there wouldn’t be enough time for Miller to be “rehabilitated in juvenile court for a crime of such enormity.”

“It is my continual plea that readers refrain from reaching conclusions until all the circumstances come to light,” Miller’s attorney Christine Branstad says Each suspect has entered a not guilty plea.
