The first new bomber in 30 years could cost nearly $700 million (£569 million) each and can carry both nuclear and regular weapons.

Details about the plane are still a secret, which was to be expected.

But US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said it was “proof that America’s advantages in creativity and innovation will last for a long time.”

On Friday, a ceremony was held at Northrop Grumman’s factory in California to show off the B-21 Raider.

Mr. Austin said that the plane would be a big improvement over the bombers already in the US fleet. He said that “even the most advanced air defence systems will have a hard time finding the B-21 in the sky.”

“This plane is the result of 50 years of progress in low-observable technology,” he said.

He also said that the plane was made with a “open system architecture” that makes it possible to add “new weapons that haven’t even been thought of yet.”

Even though the possibility of a flight without a crew wasn’t talked about at the ceremony, a US Air Force spokeswoman said the plane was “prepared for the possibility, but no decision has been made to fly without a crew.”

The B-21 is likely to take its first flight next year.

It will eventually replace the B-1 and B-2 models. According to Bloomberg, it will cost $203 billion (£165 billion) to build, buy, and run the fleet over the next 30 years.

The plane maker said that they are making six planes at the moment and that they will have the “next generation of stealth” and that they are using “new manufacturing techniques and materials.”

At least 100 of these planes will be bought by the US Air Force.
