Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm, has struck Mexico’s southern coast, specifically the beach resorts near Acapulco, prompting warnings of “catastrophic damage” from the U.S. National Hurricane Center (NHC).

The hurricane carried maximum sustained winds of approximately 165 mph (270 km/h) along with heavy rainfall upon making landfall near Acapulco, as reported by the NHC.

The storm has the potential to bring up to 20 inches (51 cm) of rain to parts of Guerrero and Oaxaca, raising concerns about flash floods and mudslides.

Additionally, authorities have expressed alarm at the “potentially catastrophic” storm surge and the “life-threatening” surf and rip current conditions.

Mexico’s national water agency CONAGUA has issued warnings about six-to-eight-meter-high surf, both off Guerrero state, where Acapulco is located, and in certain areas of Oaxaca state.

According to the NHC, Hurricane Otis was positioned about 55 miles south-southeast of Acapulco as of 9 p.m. on Tuesday (0300 GMT), with maximum sustained winds of 160 mph (257 km/h).

Preparations for the storm’s arrival have been actively underway in Guerrero, with authorities getting storm shelters ready and the National Guard assisting in rescue and evacuation planning.

President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador also confirmed the enactment of a disaster plan by the defense ministry before the hurricane’s arrival. Acapulco’s beaches were patrolled by soldiers as they emptied in anticipation of the storm.

Schools across Guerrero have canceled classes for Wednesday as a precaution, as announced by Governor Evelyn Salgado.
