Congressman Mike Johnson has been nominated as the latest Republican candidate for the position of Speaker of the House of Representatives, becoming the fourth nominee following the unsuccessful bids of three others who failed to secure enough support from their colleagues.

This selection, which occurred after three rounds of voting on Tuesday, marks the second nominee put forth on the same day.

The House of Representatives has been in a state of speakerless gridlock, unable to pass legislative bills since the ousting of Kevin McCarthy on October 3rd.

The choice of Congressman Mike Johnson from Louisiana, aged 51, was announced by House Republican Conference Chairwoman Elise Stefanik.

Their nominee must secure the majority of 217 votes to win the position with Republicans holding only a narrow majority over Democrats in the House. The outcome remains uncertain as to whether Mr. Johnson will obtain the necessary support to wield the gavel.

Mr. Johnson secured the second position behind Mr. Emmer, who subsequently withdrew after facing criticism from former President Donald Trump in the initial rounds of voting on Tuesday.

Congressman Mike Johnson received 128 votes, with Congressman Byron Donald coming in second place with 29 votes in the final round of voting.

Mr. Johnson’s nomination is expected to undergo a full vote in the House, potentially as soon as Wednesday afternoon. Republicans will need to regroup and nominate another candidate in the event of his failure to secure the position.

Some Republicans, like Congressman Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin, expressed skepticism regarding Mr. Johnson’s chances of winning enough support in the House, characterizing the repeated nomination process as a form of “insanity.”

Mike Johnson, a lawyer and former talk radio host, has been serving in the House since 2016. He previously chaired the Republican Study Committee and is regarded as a close ally of Mr. Jordan. He played a significant role in the effort to contest Joe Biden’s victory in the presidential election in 2020.
