South Australian authorities are currently in pursuit of the body of a man believed to have fallen victim to a shark attack.

The 55-year-old surfer was near Granites Beach on the Eyre Peninsula, south of Streaky Bay, when witnesses reported a shark attack on Tuesday morning.

Search efforts, involving both air and water operations with the help of local volunteers, are underway.

This marks the third significant shark attack in the state this year, with a fatal incident in May about 120km from Streaky Bay and a non-fatal attack earlier this month.

While the specific shark species involved remains uncertain, witnesses have described it as being over 4 meters (13 feet) in length.

Residents in Streaky Bay reported hearing sirens sounding for an extended period in the morning.

“I knew then there must have been something wrong, and the sirens sort of went away towards the back beach area where the surf is,” he said.

As reported by 9News, the man was among a group of six surfers in the water, but he had ventured farther out than the others.

Mr. McEvoy also noted that the town was experiencing an influx of surfers and suggested that the fishing season might be a contributing factor to a potential rise in shark presence in the area.

The waters off South Australia’s western coast are renowned for their shark population, and scientists have emphasized that an uptick in shark sightings does not necessarily indicate a surge in their numbers.

Granites Beach is situated approximately 700 kilometers (434 miles) from Adelaide, the capital of the state.
