In the aftermath of Storm Babet’s flooding in Aberdeenshire, a tragic discovery was made as a man was found dead inside a vehicle, having become trapped during the deluge.

This somber event followed extensive search efforts by officers in Marykirk, prompted by a red weather warning due to heavy rain and strong winds in northeast Scotland.

While formal identification is pending, the man’s family has been notified. Sadly, he is the third storm-related fatality in Scotland.

The first victim, John Gillan, 56, lost his life on Thursday when a tree fell on his van near Forfar. Emergency services were unable to save him.

Additionally, tributes have poured in for Wendy Taylor, a 57-year-old Perthshire businesswoman, who was swept away in the Water of Lee, Glen Esk. She was associated with Taylor’s Snacks and Taypack Potatoes, and her loss has deeply saddened the community.

Storm Babet has also claimed two lives in England, one in Shropshire and another in Chesterfield. First Minister Humza Yousaf has pledged government support for an Angus community severely affected by the flooding.

He described the flooding as “unprecedented” due to over a month’s worth of rainfall in a single weekend.

The primary A90 road in northeast Scotland, between Forfar and Brechin, remains closed, causing significant disruptions for both individuals and businesses.

In a separate incident, authorities are investigating the discovery of another body in a burn near East Road in Elgin, Moray, which is unrelated to Storm Babet.
