Israel’s military chief, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, declared, “Now is the time for war” in a dramatic escalation of the conflict with the Palestinian resistance group Hamas. Israel has moved tanks near the Gaza Strip in preparation for a potential ground invasion.

Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi emphasized the need to investigate and learn from the situation while acknowledging the security lapses around Gaza that facilitated the attack. Nevertheless, he firmly stated, “Now is the moment for war.”

The current crisis was triggered by a series of deadly attacks by Hamas, including the deadliest attack in Israel’s history, which has resulted in a death toll exceeding 1,300, with Israeli and foreign hostages taken to Gaza.

Israel has responded with a siege on Gaza and a bombing campaign that has led to the destruction of entire neighbourhoods.

According to Gaza authorities, over 1,500 Palestinians have lost their lives, and concerns about depleted fuel for emergency generators, food shortages, and limited access to fresh water have been raised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP).

The International Criminal Court (ICC) has declared its jurisdiction over potential war crimes committed by both Hamas and Israelis in the Gaza Strip, opening the door for possible investigations into the events.

The Israeli government has presented graphic images of children and civilians allegedly killed by Hamas during a weekend rampage in its efforts to garner international support for its response to the attacks.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken expressed his deep concern, describing the images as “simply depravity in the worst imaginable way.”

The call for war by Israel’s military chief and the preparations for a ground invasion have become central talking points as the crisis unfolds.

US Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin emphasized that the US offers security assistance to Israel without conditions, expecting that Israel will take the necessary steps to address the situation.

Global concerns and safety measures have emerged, with civil unrest in Europe, temporary closures of Jewish schools in Amsterdam and London, and heightened security measures around synagogues and Jewish community centres in New York and Los Angeles as the situation continues to develop.

The international community is closely monitoring the situation, urging restraint, and calling for a diplomatic solution to prevent further loss of life and suffering in the region.
