A groundbreaking initiative has been launched with the goal of gathering DNA samples from 500,000 individuals of African descent, aiming to rectify the existing imbalance in genetic research.

Genetic research is increasingly pivotal in discovering treatments for various diseases, yet a glaring underrepresentation of African-origin DNA samples persists.

The initiative, led by the Meharry Medical College in Nashville, USA, seeks to address this discrepancy. Anil Shanker, the senior vice-president of research and innovation at the college, explained to the BBC’s Newsday program that historical factors have led to the exclusion of African-Americans in DNA studies, often stemming from mistrust of medical research.

Initial sample collection will occur at educational institutions in the US and the University of Zambia, with plans to expand the effort across Africa, as reported by news agency.

This comprehensive endeavor to amass these samples is anticipated to span five years, with the data being securely stored by the non-profit organization, the Diaspora Human Genomics Institute.
