White Island: Firm found culpable for NZ volcano incident
Whakaari Management, a New Zealand-based company, has been found guilty of failing to “minimize risk” for the 22 individuals who tragically lost their lives in the 2019 White Island volcano catastrophe.
Judge Evangelos Thomas strongly criticized what he described as “remarkable lapses” on the part of this company, which holds licenses for tours to White Island.
This legal action is the most extensive of its kind initiated by New Zealand’s regulatory authority, Worksafe NZ. Whakaari Management could potentially face fines of up to NZ$1.5 million ($928,000; £724,000).
A total of thirteen parties were charged in connection with the disaster, with six having admitted guilt while the charges against six others were dropped.
The judge stated that Whakaari Management was responsible for the “management and control” of the active volcano. A separate charge regarding the safety of the company’s own employees was also dismissed.
The ownership of the volcano and the authorization of tour operations were inherited by James, Andrew, and Peter Buttle, who own the company.
White Island, also known by its Maori name, Whakaari, had been experiencing volcanic activity since 2011, and it was classified as being at Volcanic Alert Level 2 at the time of the tragic incident on December 9, 2019, indicating “moderate to heightened volcanic unrest.”
