Canadian man Nathaniel Veltman has been found guilty of murder for intentionally running over and killing four members of the Afzaal family with his car in London, Ontario.
The jury, however, did not specify if the act was motivated by terrorism. This case marked the first time Canada’s terrorism laws were argued before a jury in a first-degree murder trial.
The victims, a Pakistani-Canadian Muslim family, included Salman Afzaal, his wife Madiha Salman, their daughter Yumna Afzaal, and Salman’s mother Talat Afzaal.
The couple’s nine-year-old son survived but was seriously injured. Veltman had pleaded not guilty, citing mental illness. The sentencing will be at a later date.
