China is accused of closing, destroying, and repurposing mosques in a “systematic effort” to curb Islam, according to a report by Human Rights Watch.

The crackdown is part of Beijing’s increased control over organized religion, despite officially allowing religious freedom.

There are about 20 million Muslims in China, and the report highlights the closure and conversion of mosques, particularly in the Ningxia autonomous region.

The Chinese Communist Party’s efforts to align religion with political ideology and Chinese culture have led to increased repression in Tibet, Xinjiang, and other areas.

The consolidation of mosques is part of the “Sinicisation” policy promoted by President Xi Jinping to transform religious beliefs to reflect Chinese culture and society.

Ethnic and religious minorities, including Uighurs, Tibetans, and Christians, have faced similar repression.
