Chinese President Xi Jinping has landed in the US for his first visit in six years, set to meet with Joe Biden in the San Francisco Bay Area on Wednesday.

The high-stakes meeting is seen as an opportunity to ease tensions in the ongoing US-China rivalry. Xi, greeted by US officials including Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen, will also attend the APEC summit.

Demonstrations, both for and against his visit, are expected in San Francisco. The talks will cover economic issues, efforts to improve US-China relations, and discussions on the Israel-Hamas conflict and US support for Ukraine.

Economic concerns, including supply chain challenges, will be a focal point, with Xi looking to attract foreign investment during the APEC summit.

Biden has emphasized the goal of improving relations with China without seeking complete economic separation.

Military-to-military contacts and cooperation on issues like combating fentanyl production are on the agenda. Protests, both in support of and critical of Xi’s policies, are anticipated during the summit.
