A remarkably rare blue diamond, known as the Bleu Royal, achieved a remarkable price of over $40 million (£32 million) at a Christie’s auction held in Geneva.

The pear-shaped diamond, weighing 17.61 carats, was set in a ring and was ultimately sold for $43.8 million. Christie’s described this jewel as the “largest internally flawless fancy vivid blue gem” ever to be offered at an auction.

Notably, the Bleu Royal had been part of a private collection for half a century, marking its debut appearance at an auction.

The auction house lauded the diamond’s exceptional rarity, hailing it as one of the most extraordinary finds.

Christie’s pointed out that only three fancy vivid blue diamonds exceeding 10 carats have ever been auctioned in its 250-year history, occurring in 2010, 2014, and 2016. The Oppenheimer Blue, a 14.62 carat blue diamond, sold for over $57 million at Christie’s in 2016.

Max Fawcett, Christie’s head of jewelry in Geneva, expressed great satisfaction with Tuesday’s sale, noting that it represented the “most expensive jewelry lot sold in all of 2023” by any auction house worldwide.

Furthermore, on a separate occasion, Christie’s sold a Rolex watch famously worn by American actor Marlon Brando in the film “Apocalypse Now” for approximately $5 million. The watch featured an engraving on the back, bearing “M. Brando.”

Additionally, Christie’s is concurrently conducting an online auction of a pearl necklace worn by Audrey Hepburn in the final scene of the film “Roman Holiday.” The auction for this iconic piece spans from November 3 to November 16.
