Dominican Republic: Over 21 dead after storm pours torrential rain
Heavy rain in the Dominican Republic resulted in at least 21 deaths and the displacement of thousands of residents over the weekend.
Nine people died in the capital, Santo Domingo when torrential rain caused the collapse of a highway tunnel wall. More than 13,000 people were evacuated to secure areas as the rain caused flooded homes, power cuts, and damaged infrastructure.
Dominican President Luis Abinader described it as the “largest rainfall event ever” in the country’s history. The rain, linked to a tropical depression, is expected to continue into Monday, with numerous provinces under weather alerts.
Classes have been suspended until Wednesday for safety evaluations, and the president expressed deep shock at the loss of life.
