Indian authorities have altered the winter break schedule, closing all schools in New Delhi due to deteriorating air quality caused by smog.

This decision was made in response to the ongoing issue of high smog levels in the region, impacting people’s health.

The move follows a decision by the Pakistani government to impose a health emergency in Lahore and two other divisions, with measures set to be in effect from November 9 to 12.

During this period, all markets, shopping malls, restaurants, cinemas, gyms, schools, and public and private offices will be closed in Lahore, Gujranwala, and Hafizabad divisions.

India and Pakistan are grappling with severe smog conditions, leading to various health problems for their populations. The situation has prompted authorities to take measures to safeguard public health.

In New Delhi, the education department issued a notification stating, “In the wake of the implementation of GRAP-IV measures due to Severe + Air Quality prevailing in Delhi and seeing that no respite from such adverse weather conditions in near future is predicted by the IMD, the Winter Break for the session 2023-24 is ordered to be preponed so that schools can be totally closed and both children and teachers can stay at home.”

As a result, the notification specified that all schools would observe a winter break from November 9 to 18.

The rapid industrialization in South Asia has recently contributed to increased pollution from factories, construction activities, and vehicles in densely populated areas.

The problem worsens during the cooler autumn and winter months, as temperature inversion traps pollutants closer to the ground.

Lahore, in particular, has been heavily affected by smog this week, with reduced visibility and concerns about its impact on residents’ health.

Rising air pollution in South Asia has been linked to a significant reduction in life expectancy, with a report published in August highlighting the growing health burden posed by hazardous air in one of the world’s most polluted regions.
