The FBI has seized electronic devices, believed to be two iPhones and an iPad, from New York City Mayor Eric Adams in an apparent escalation of an investigation into campaign financing.

The search focuses on whether Adams’ campaign conspired with the Turkish government to receive illegal foreign donations.

Adams, 63, a Democrat and former police captain, denies any wrongdoing. His campaign stated that he promptly complied with the FBI’s request to surrender the devices and emphasized that he has not been accused of any wrongdoing, continuing to cooperate with the investigation.

Boyd Johnson, a lawyer for the mayor’s campaign organization, explained that Adams had been approached by the FBI after an event, complying immediately.

Adams, in his statement, affirmed his expectation that all members of his staff follow the law and cooperate with investigations, expressing his transparency, stating, “I have nothing to hide.”

The investigation came to light after a raid at the home of Adams’ top campaign fundraiser, Brianna Suggs. The FBI seized laptops, iPhones, and a folder labeled “Eric Adams.”

The seizure of Adams’ electronics on Monday marks the first direct involvement of the mayor in the investigation while other searches were conducted in New York.

According to a reviewed search warrant, prosecutors are examining whether the Adams campaign conspired with the Turkish government or individuals linked to Turkey to violate campaign finance laws.

The investigation also explores whether the campaign provided benefits to Turkey or these individuals in exchange for donations, potentially masking foreign money as contributions from American citizens.

Law enforcement officials familiar with the matter suggest that the alleged scheme being investigated would allow funds from foreign entities to be disguised as donations from American citizens, violating regulations barring foreign nationals from contributing to US election campaigns.
