Former Catalan lawmaker wounded in face in Madrid
Alejo Vidal-Quadras, the former leader of Spain’s center-right People’s Party in Catalonia, was shot in the face in Madrid on Thursday, according to police.
The incident occurred in the Salamanca area, and Vidal-Quadras was subsequently hospitalized, with his life reported to be not in danger.
Police are searching for a gunman and an accomplice who fled on a black Yamaha motorcycle. The 78-year-old Vidal-Quadras was a former head of the People’s Party in Catalonia and a founder of Spain’s far-right Vox party.
He also served as the European Parliament vice-president from 2009 to 2014. The motive for the attack is unknown, and authorities have not made any arrests.
Political leaders, including PP leader Alberto Nunez Feijoo and Vox leader Santiago Abascal, expressed shock and called for a thorough investigation.
Acting Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez also called for swift arrests, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni condemned the “cowardly attack” while wishing Vidal-Quadras a speedy recovery.
