Spain’s acting Prime Minister, Pedro Sánchez, has reached a contentious amnesty deal with a Catalan separatist party, drawing criticism from conservative opponents who accuse him of leading Spain towards “humiliation.”

Despite the Popular Party winning the July elections, they failed to secure a majority. The amnesty agreement, condemned by right-wing protesters, grants the Socialists the required support for four more years in office.

Protests have erupted in Madrid and other cities, expressing displeasure over a law providing amnesty to individuals linked to the 2017 failed secession bid in Catalonia.

Critics, including the Popular Party, allege Sánchez is offering a “blank cheque for the independence movement,” prompting accusations of selling Spain’s history.

The political tension intensified with a shooting incident involving Alejo Vidal-Quadras, a former PP leader and Vox founder, who opposed the “infamous pact.”

Vidal-Quadras was shot in the head and wounded, with potential links to his advocacy for Iran’s exiled opposition. The Socialists had previously secured a deal with the Catalan Republican Left and finalized an agreement with the more radical Together for Catalonia, led by Carles Puigdemont.

The amnesty draft, covering charges from 2012 to 2023, excludes named individuals and proposes a “self-determination referendum” by JxCat within the Spanish constitution’s terms.

Puigdemont views the deal as a step towards resolving the Catalonia-Spain conflict, while opponents like Alberto Núñez Feijóo, leader of the PP, deem it a dark day in Spain’s history, accusing Sánchez of surrendering to the independence movement’s “blackmail.”

The contentious amnesty law faces parliamentary consideration in the coming days. The European Commission has sought information on the draft law, responding to concerns raised by citizens and stakeholders.
