Haiti: Gang-related violence prompts hospital evacuation
Police evacuated a hospital in Port-au-Prince, the Haitian capital, due to nearby gang violence. Fontaine Hospital Center had over 100 patients, including nearly half children, removed amid unrest in the Cite Soleil shantytown following a gang leader’s death.
The hospital director clarified reports of gangs entering and taking hostages, stating that the violence occurred around the facility.
Houses near the hospital were set on fire, and patients, including a woman who had a recent Caesarean section, needed assistance from local authorities.
Gangs have gained control in Port-au-Prince since the 2021 assassination of the country’s president, leading to a surge in violence.
