Italian MPs have approved legislation prohibiting the production, sale, or import of cultivated meat or animal feed.

The right-wing government frames the ban as a defense of Italian tradition. Agriculture Minister Francesco Lollobrigida stated, “Italy is the world’s first country safe from the social and economic risks of synthetic food.”

The vote led to both pro and anti-ban rallies, with a scuffle breaking out between farmers and some MPs. The bill, supported by 159 votes to 53, imposes fines of up to €60,000 for breaches.

However, as cultivated meat is only approved for human consumption in Singapore and the US, the law has limited immediate impact.

The EU has not yet approved lab-grown meat, and if it does, Italy’s law could face challenges from the European Commission.

Critics argue that there is nothing synthetic about lab-grown meat, as it involves growing natural cells without genetic modification.

The legislation is also criticized by animal welfare groups advocating lab-made meat as an environmentally friendly alternative.
