Japan has strongly denounced the seizure of the Japanese-operated cargo ship Galaxy Leader in the Red Sea by Houthi rebels backed by Iran.

A spokesperson from the Japanese government clarified that it was operated by Nippon Yusen although the Yemeni militia claimed the vessel was Israeli.

The chief cabinet secretary of Japan stated that efforts are underway to secure the release of the ship. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu attributed the hijacking to Iran, accusing it of an “Iranian attack on an international ship.”

The ship, believed to be British-owned, was en route to India when seized off the coast of Yemen. The crew, consisting of Bulgarians and Filipinos, does not include any Japanese nationals.

The Houthi rebels asserted that the ship was Israeli and taken to a Yemeni port, linking it to their threat against Israeli ships in response to Israel’s actions in Gaza.

The Israel Defense Forces described the incident as a “very grave incident of global consequence,” emphasizing the ship’s interception in the southern Red Sea.

The ongoing conflict involves Houthi rebels, supported by Iran, engaged in a civil war with Yemen’s official government, backed by Saudi Arabia, since 2014.
