Joe Biden names Pakistani-born attorney to US Federal appeal Court
US President Joe Biden nominated Adeel Mangi, a Pakistan-born lawyer, to the US Court of Appeals for the 3rd Circuit in Philadelphia.
Mangi would be the first Muslim American to serve on the federal appeals court if confirmed by the Democratic-controlled Senate.
Currently a partner at Patterson Belknap Webb & Tyler LLP, Mangi, a Harvard- and Oxford-trained lawyer, has a history of notable achievements in litigation, including securing the largest jury verdict in Virginia’s court system and the largest settlement with New York state.
He has actively worked on religious freedom cases, particularly those involving the Muslim community during the Trump administration.
The nomination follows Biden’s previous nomination of Zahid N Quraishi, the first Muslim, to a federal district court, who was confirmed by the Senate for a judgeship in New Jersey.
