Closing arguments have been presented in the trial of Nathaniel Veltman, a 22-year-old Canadian accused of murdering four members of a Muslim family by striking them with his vehicle.

Veltman faces four first-degree murder charges, one attempted murder count, and terrorism charges, with prosecutors asserting that he targeted the Afzaal family due to their faith.

despite both sides agreeing that Veltman was driving, he has pleaded not guilty, claiming to be in a “dreamlike state” during the incident on June 6, 2021.

The case marks the first instance in Canada where a jury is considering terrorism charges related to white supremacy. The jury must determine not only Veltman’s guilt but also if his actions constitute terrorism.

Testifying in his defense, Veltman mentioned consuming magic mushrooms before the crash, describing an uncontrollable “urge” when he encountered the family.

A forensic psychiatrist noted Veltman’s mental health issues, including obsessive-compulsive disorder and severe depression.

Defense lawyer Christopher Hicks portrayed Veltman’s mental state as a “runaway freight train,” while prosecutors argued that the defendant’s actions were motivated by hate and white nationalist ideologies.

The trial watched closely for its potential implications on terrorism charges in such cases, awaits the jury’s decision on Veltman’s fate, which could result in life imprisonment if found guilty.
