Mexico authorities find 123 migrants stuck in trailer
Mexican authorities discovered 123 individuals from neighboring countries confined in a trailer in the central state of San Luis Potosi, including 34 children, according to Mexico’s immigration agency.
Most of the trapped migrants, hailing from Guatemala, Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, Ecuador, and Cuba, were found in Matehuala, approximately 600 km north of Mexico City.
The migrants’ destination remains undisclosed, but many traverse the Americas hoping to reach the United States. The migrants are receiving food, medical aid, and temporary accommodation until their situation is resolved discovered after a resident reported hearing cries from the locked trailer.
The circumstances surrounding their journey, such as whether they are part of the ongoing migrant caravan, are unclear.
The difficult route exposes many migrants to criminal organizations, making them susceptible to kidnapping and extortion.
Criticism of US President Joe Biden’s handling of migration, particularly at the US-Mexico border, has intensified, with over 2.2 million migrants detained by US authorities since last October.
