North Korea has announced its intention to enhance its military deterrent to safeguard its security against the backdrop of a U.S. nuclear arsenal pointed at the country.

The move comes as North Korea criticized the United States for a recent intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) test.

The U.S. Air Force conducted a test involving a nuclear-capable Minuteman III missile launched from a base in California on Wednesday.

However, the missile was destroyed after an anomaly was detected. Notably, the test was attended by South Korean defense officials on their first visit of this kind since 2016.

A North Korean military commentator argued that despite the test’s failure, the presence of South Korean officials indicated that U.S. nuclear weapons were aimed at North Korea.

The unnamed commentator emphasized that North Korea would persist in taking military actions to strengthen its deterrence and ensure strategic security in the Korean Peninsula and the wider region.

The report was disseminated by the KCNA state news agency, referring to North Korea by the initials of its official name, the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.

Furthermore, the commentary criticized the U.S. and South Korea for various recent military developments, including the deployment of U.S. nuclear strategic bombers in South Korea.

The North Korean commentator contended that the U.S. and its allies were approaching a new “red line” of nuclear threat, calling for the reinforcement of “self-defensive nuclear-armed forces.”

South Korea’s Unification Ministry, responsible for inter-Korean affairs, raised concerns about whether North Korea was preparing to justify another military “provocation.”

Deputy ministry spokesperson Kim In-ae highlighted that the heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula were a result of North Korea’s nuclear ambitions and military provocations.

In recent times, South Korea, the United States, and Japan held joint exercises near the Korean Peninsula, which included the participation of a U.S. B-52 strategic bomber and fighter jets from the three nations.

Additionally, the U.S. and South Korea conducted air exercises involving 130 warplanes to simulate 24-hour wartime operations in the past month.

The official stance of South Korea and the United States is that these exercises aim to maintain readiness for responding to North Korean threats.

However, North Korea consistently denounces these exercises, viewing them as preparations for invasion by the United States and its South Korean ally.
