A recent investigation into the UK’s management of the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to light a troubling statement from Prime Minister Rishi Sunak.

Former Chief Scientific Adviser to the government, Patrick Vallance, revealed in his diary that during a meeting with then-Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Sunak, who was the finance minister at the time, allegedly suggested that the government should “just let people die” instead of imposing a second national lockdown.

Vallance noted the meeting in his diary on October 25, 2020, and this information was presented to the inquiry on Monday.

Vallance’s diary entry also documented Dominic Cummings, Johnson’s top adviser during the pandemic, conveying what was discussed at the meeting.

According to Vallance, Cummings stated, “Rishi thinks just let people die, and that’s okay. This all feels like a complete lack of leadership.”

A spokesperson for Sunak stated that the prime minister would articulate his position when providing evidence to the inquiry, rather than responding to each aspect separately.

The inquiry, scheduled to continue until the summer of 2026, is scrutinizing the government’s response to the coronavirus pandemic, which led to extensive economic shutdowns and claimed over 220,000 lives in Britain, as reported by Reuters.

Senior government officials have repeatedly acknowledged that the government was ill-prepared for the pandemic, and a “toxic” and “macho” culture impeded the response to the health crisis.

Sunak faces the risk that evidence presented during the inquiry could undermine his attempt to portray himself as a departure from the chaotic leadership of Johnson, despite being one of the most senior ministers in that government.

Previous evidence also revealed that he was labeled “Dr Death” by a government scientific adviser due to his “Eat Out to Help Out” policy in the summer of 2020, which subsidized meals in pubs and restaurants but faced criticism from health experts for contributing to the spread of the virus.
