Extensive areas of Tuscany have experienced severe flooding, resulting in three fatalities and leaving six individuals unaccounted for, as relentless heavy rain and strong winds battered central Italy.

The situation saw vehicles being swept away, and water levels in the River Arno continued to rise, with expectations of it overflowing its banks later in the day.

Hospitals in the affected regions were inundated, people found themselves trapped in submerged underpasses, and rescuers employed rubber dinghies to evacuate individuals from their homes.

Storm Ciarán, which has wrought havoc across Western Europe, has caused over 10 deaths in its wake. Winds reaching 207 km/h (129 mph) were recorded on the north-west coast of France.

The storm unleashed its fury on southern England, Belgium, the Netherlands and Germany, as well as the Atlantic coasts of Spain and Portugal.

A five-year-old child was one of two individuals in Belgium killed by falling trees among the casualties. The storm led to downed power lines and extensive transportation disruptions, prompting evacuations of residents from homes on the Channel Island of Jersey.

Tuscany bore the brunt of the storm as it arrived on Thursday night, with regional governor Eugenio Giani declaring a state of emergency as winds reached 140 km/h.

Coastal areas like Livorno, as well as the towns of Prato and Montemurlo near Florence, suffered some of the most severe damage.

Reports indicated that 200mm (7.8 inches) of rain had fallen since Thursday afternoon, causing the Bisenzio River to overflow in Montemurlo.

An 85-year-old man was discovered deceased on the ground floor of his flooded residence, unable to ascend to safety.

The governor of Tuscany shared a video illustrating cars being carried away by floodwaters and urged people to seek refuge on higher floors.

The mayor of Prato, Matteo Biffoni, characterized the overnight events as a “blow to the stomach,” with widespread areas submerged and the ground floor of the town’s Santo Stefano hospital partially inundated.
