Efforts to rescue 41 workers trapped in a tunnel for the past eight days are undergoing a strategic shift after a temporary halt in pushing metal pipes through the debris wall due to a cracking sound In India.

New plans involve the drilling of two parallel tunnels to potentially serve as an “escape route” for the workers. The tunnel collapse occurred in Uttarakhand after a landslide on November 12, prompting ongoing rescue operations.

Rescuers are now working on side tunnels to complement efforts from the tunnel’s mouth despite encountering challenges in the Himalayan terrain, including soft soil and rocks.

Federal Highways and Roads Minister Nitin Gadkari, who visited the site, noted the complexity of the operation and estimated a continuation of rescue operations for “two to three days.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi assured the trapped workers’ families of seamless coordination between federal and state rescuers and emphasized the importance of maintaining the workers’ morale.

The Silkyara tunnel in Uttarkashi is part of a nationwide highway project aimed at enhancing connectivity to renowned pilgrimage sites in Uttarakhand, a state known for its sacred Hindu sites amid its mountainous landscapes housing Himalayan peaks and glaciers.
