Zimbabwe has declared a state of emergency in the capital Harare due to a cholera outbreak that has resulted in dozens of deaths and over 7,000 suspected cases.

The outbreak, spreading across the city, has invoked memories of a deadly 2008 outbreak, which claimed thousands of lives.

Mayor Ian Makone stated, “We have declared a state of emergency because of cholera.”

Health authorities are struggling to manage the high number of admissions, citing a lack of health workers and supplies. The cholera outbreak is linked to a lack of access to clean water.

The epicenter is Harare’s Kuwadzana suburb, contributing to nearly half of the reported cases. Cholera is caused by consuming contaminated food or water, and Zimbabwe has faced challenges in recent months combating the deadly outbreak.

A cholera outbreak paralyzed the country, resulting in over 4,000 deaths and severe disruptions to basic services in 2008. Zimbabwe declared a state of emergency due to typhoid and cholera cases.

The current outbreak has similarities to the 2008 crisis, with the mayor stating, “The cholera outbreak has come with vengeance.”
