Six teenagers in France have been convicted by a juvenile court for their involvement in the beheading of a teacher, Samuel Paty, in 2020.
The teacher was killed after showing cartoons of the prophet of Islam during a class discussion on free expression. The attacker, a young radicalized Chechen, was shot by the police. Five defendants, aged 14 and 15 during the attack, were found guilty of identifying and staking out the teacher for the attacker.
Another, aged 13 at the time, was convicted for lying about the classroom debate, fueling online anger against the teacher. All received brief or suspended prison terms and are required to stay in school or jobs during their suspended terms.
The trial was held behind closed doors due to French law protecting the identities of minors involved in legal proceedings.
