Putin unveils new nuclear subs, vows to bolster Russia’s naval might
After Russia launched two new nuclear submarines, President Vladimir Putin pledged to bolster the nation’s naval might.
Putin went to the northern city of Severodvinsk to see the Emperor Alexander III and Krasnoyarsk ships, which had been constructed over the previous six years at the Sevmash shipbuilding yard.
Russia plans to add the two submarines to its Pacific fleet.
“With such ships and such weapons, Russia will feel that it is safe,” Putin told officials and naval officers at the ceremony.
Emperor Alexander III is one of the 16 nuclear-tipped Bulava intercontinental ballistic missiles that are mounted atop Russia’s new Borei (Arctic Wind) class of nuclear-powered submarines. Since the end of the Cold War, Russia has not launched a new class of underwater warships until the Borei.
Putin said that the Yasen (Ash Tree) class of multipurpose submarines, of which the Krasnoyarsk is a member, is capable of hitting both land and sea targets with its long-range, highly precise missiles.
“We will quantitatively strengthen the combat readiness of the Russian Navy, our naval power in the Arctic, the Far East, the Black Sea, the Baltic Sea and the Caspian Sea – the most important strategic areas of the world’s oceans,” Putin said.
Putin has frequently emphasized the potential of Russia’s new generation of weapons, especially its nuclear systems, and their significance as a deterrent. Last Friday, he said he will run for president a fifth time in a March election.
According to security analysts, since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine, where Putin’s conventional troops are engaged in an unending battle of attrition, nuclear weapons have become increasingly significant in his rhetoric and way of thinking.
Eight additional nuclear submarines are being built by Russia; three are Borei-class and five are Yasen-class.
