China and Japan accuse each other of maritime incursions in East China Sea
Following a conflict between its coast guards in the waters surrounding disputed islands in the East China Sea, China and Japan accused one another of maritime invasions.
The tiny islands are known as Diaoyu in China and Senkaku in Japan. On the previous day, a Japanese fishing boat and several patrol boats entered the waters surrounding the islands, according to a report released by China’s coast guard on Sunday.
China claims the uninhabited islands, but Japan still has sovereignty over them.
China’s coast guard issued a statement saying that it had followed the rules and taken the appropriate steps to warn the Japanese vessels to stay away.
Following warnings, two Chinese maritime police vessels departed Japan’s territorial waters surrounding the islands, according to a statement released by the coast guard on Saturday. It said that a Japanese fishing boat that the Chinese ships had approached was under the protection of its patrol boats.
There were similar events in October and November.
China’s involvement in Asian maritime issues has been growing. Following their second clash in as many days, China and the Philippines hurled accusations on Sunday following a collision between two vessels in a portion of the South China Sea that each country claims.
