For more than 2 years Tesla has been investigating Autopilot mode. The company is recalling more than two million cars in the United States.

The investigation by the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) revealed a partial defect in Autopilot.

Tesla plans to address the issue through a software update delivered “over the air.” This recall encompasses nearly every Tesla sold in the US since the introduction of the Autopilot feature in 2015.

Autopilot, designed to assist drivers with steering, acceleration, and braking, requires user input and cannot function independently.

The NHTSA identified the problem with Autopilot’s driver monitoring system, responsible for detecting the driver’s attention. Tesla acknowledged that the controls of this system might not effectively prevent misuse by the driver. The NHTSA will continue to monitor the software after the update.

This development comes a week after a former Tesla employee expressed concerns to the media, stating that he believed the technology was not sufficiently safe for use on public roads. This marks the second recall affecting Tesla vehicles this year.
