Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky is making his third visit to the United States, seeking to secure a threatened US defense package valued at billions of dollars for Kyiv.

The aid has become entangled in domestic partisan politics in the US. This week holds critical decisions for Ukraine, with the European Union also considering formal talks on its accession to the bloc.

Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban’s opposition to the move could pose a significant hurdle. Zelensky, following an intense conversation with Orban, will arrive in Washington on Monday.

Scheduled meetings with US President Joe Biden and Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson, along with an address to the Senate on Tuesday, are on the agenda.

Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington aims to emphasize the unwavering US commitment to supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion.

A $60 billion military aid package is currently facing obstacles in Congress, encountering resistance from Republicans who argue for directing more funds to domestic security at the US-Mexico border.

A Senate vote last week blocked the package, prompting President Biden to urge lawmakers for approval.

In a televised address, he emphasized the urgency, warning that Russia would not halt its aggression. Zelensky’s visit becomes crucial as Ukraine’s counter-attack has faced challenges, and Western support has shown signs of fatigue.

After the Senate vote, Ukrainian First Lady Olena Zelenska emphasized the peril Ukrainians face if Western support diminishes.

“We need the help. In simple words, we cannot get tired of this situation, because if we do, we die,” she said.

“And if the world gets tired, they will simply let us die.”
