The US telecoms giant, AT&T, announced that personal data belonging to 73 million current or former customers has been leaked online. This includes addresses, social security numbers, and passcodes, which were published on the dark web. AT&T stated that it had not identified evidence indicating the data had been stolen but had initiated an investigation by bringing in cybersecurity experts.

The company announced that it had reset customers’ passcodes. They urged customers to “remain vigilant by monitoring account activity and credit reports.” The data involved in the breach appears to be from 2019 or earlier and is linked to 7.6 million customers and 65.4 former account holders.

AT&T also confirmed that the leaked information includes full names, email addresses, and dates of birth, although the company assured that financial information had not been included in the leak.

The company expressed uncertainty about whether the data originated from its systems or a third-party supplier. AT&T, one of the largest mobile and internet services providers in the United States, covers approximately 290 million people across the US with its wireless 5G network.

In February, a major outage affected tens of thousands of phone users, prompting the firm to apologize and offer a $5 credit to those affected. Prosecutors in New York initiated an investigation into that episode, which rendered people unable to use their phones for approximately 12 hours.
