Authorities have charged three men under the National Security Act for aiding the Hong Kong intelligence service and engaging in foreign interference. All three individuals will appear in custody at Westminster Magistrates’ Court later.

The Metropolitan Police clarified that the Hong Kong investigation was unrelated to a separate case involving Russia.

As part of the investigation, authorities detained a total of 11 people under section 27 of the National Security Act.

The three charged men are Chi Leung (Peter) Wai, 38, residing in Staines-upon-Thames; Matthew Trickett, 37, residing in Maidenhead; and Chung Biu Yuen, 63, residing in Hackney.

Commander Dominic Murphy, head of the Met’s Counter Terrorism Command, said: “I want to reassure the public that we do not believe there to be any wider threat to them. This investigation remains ongoing, but now that charges have been brought, I urge people not to speculate or comment further in relation to this case.”

Counter-terrorism officers arrested eight men and a woman in the Yorkshire area on 1 May. The next day, authorities arrested a man in London and another man in the Yorkshire area.
