On Thursday, police arrested several climate activists after they staged a protest at London’s Heathrow Airport, marking the latest disruption by the Just Stop Oil group targeting airports. Police reported arresting seven individuals who blocked a “passenger search area” at Heathrow, Europe’s busiest airport, and noted that the protest caused “minimal disruption.”

Just Stop Oil, which has organized or carried out at least four protests in July, reported that 17 people were arrested in connection with the action—seven at the airport and at least ten elsewhere. The group shared a picture on social media showing several people blocking entry gates inside Heathrow Airport’s departure area, carrying orange signs that read “oil kills” and “sign the treaty.”

Climate groups from across Europe, as part of the “Oil Kills” coalition, have organized these summer protests targeting aviation. They demand that governments sign an international treaty committing to end oil, coal, and gas extraction and burning by the end of the decade.

Earlier this week, police arrested two Just Stop Oil protesters for spraying paint on Heathrow’s departure walls and boards, and eight others for blocking gates at Gatwick Airport, the UK’s second busiest.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports had previously obtained court orders to prevent environmental activists from entering their grounds.
