The Gujarat administration in India has recently demolished several religious sites near the Somnath Temple, including a mosque, a cemetery, and a shrine.

Reports indicate that the operation utilized over 60 bulldozers and around 80 tractors, making it one of the largest demolition efforts in India to date.

Foreign observers have pointed out that the demolished graveyard was approximately 500 years old, representing significant religious and historical heritage. The demolitions near Somnath Temple are viewed by some as part of an initiative to promote Hindutva ideology in the region.

This incident is part of a broader pattern observed under the current government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Since 2014, there have been reports of hundreds of mosques and other minority places of worship being destroyed across India.

In Gujarat, the demolition involved over 60 bulldozers taking down a mosque, graveyard, and dargah adjacent to Somnath Temple. The BJP government has previously sought to declare various mosques illegal and subject to demolition, including the Babri Masjid, Gyanvapi Mosque, Shahi Eidgah Mosque, and Masjid Mahammadiya. Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh, has emerged as a prominent proponent for the removal of minority religious sites.

Critics argue that the BJP’s third consecutive term in power reflects a decline in secularism and democratic values in India. There are growing concerns regarding the status of minorities, particularly Muslims, who face challenges to their political, social, and religious rights.

The ongoing demolitions have ignited discussions about the protection of minority rights and religious freedoms in India, raising questions about the long-term implications for the country’s diverse population.
