NEW YORK: United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has said that violence in Gaza has crossed all limits, calling it a tragedy for innocent people.

Speaking at the opening of the UN General Assembly in New York, Guterres expressed deep concern over rising global crises. He reminded member states that the UN was founded 80 years ago to protect peace and humanity, but today its basic principles are under attack.

He said the pillars of peace and development are shaking under the weight of indifference, inequality, and impunity. “We must decide what kind of world we want to build,” he told world leaders.

Referring to Gaza, Guterres stressed that there is no justification for the collective punishment of innocent civilians in response to Hamas’s October 7 attacks. He also warned that deliberate efforts are being made to weaken the UN’s role.

The UN chief questioned the effectiveness of the Security Council, indirectly criticizing the repeated use of veto power by the United States and Russia. He said this has limited the UN’s ability to act in conflicts such as Gaza and Ukraine, leaving millions to suffer.
