Italian captain from ‘Global Sumud Flotilla’ converts to Islam in Israeli custody
An Italian captain who was part of the Global Solidarity Flotilla has converted to Islam while in Israeli custody.
According to Turkish media reports, the captain, Tommaso Bortolazzi, was commanding the flotilla’s ship Maria Cristina when Israeli authorities detained him along with his crew.
After his release, Bortolazzi arrived in Türkiye, where he spoke to the media about his experience. He said that the time in prison was extremely difficult, but the support and faith of his mostly Turkish and Muslim crewmates kept him strong.
He shared that when his Muslim companions prayed in jail, Israeli officers often tried to stop them. Witnessing this behavior, he decided to embrace Islam as an act of solidarity and faith.
Bortolazzi said he feels deeply content with his decision, describing it as the beginning of a new chapter in his life.
“My company was from Türkiye and almost all were Muslims”
“While they were praying, the police of the Israeli occupation force came inside and impeded them.”
“I felt the need to oppose this and after, with my friend, I said the shahadah”
