Test cricket could soon see big changes, as the International Cricket Council (ICC) is thinking about a new two-division system. The aim is to make the format more exciting and keep fans interested in the longest form of the game.
According to British media reports, the ICC has formed a working group to study the feasibility of this two-tier Test structure.
The proposal suggests dividing Test-playing nations into two divisions, with six teams in each. The working group is expected to present its findings to the ICC by the end of this year.
Under the initial proposal, the top six ranked teams would compete in Division 1, while the next six teams would form Division 2. Should these recommendations be approved, the new system could be implemented as early as the 2027 cricket cycle.
However, British media also highlight a key challenge facing the working group: establishing a mechanism for promotion and relegation between the two divisions. This aspect is crucial for maintaining the competitive integrity and dynamism of the proposed structure.
The move aims to inject fresh impetus into the longest format of the game, potentially leading to more competitive matches and increased interest from fans globally.
