Iraqi footballer Ahmed Radhi has died today (Jun 21) due to coronavirus.

The Iraqi health ministry has said that he died of the highly infectious respiratory disease caused by the new coronavirus.

He was 56, and has been hospitalized last week in the capital after he tested positive for the COVID-19 but he was discharged on Thursday when his condition improved.

 

After few hours he was readmitted in the hospital and has died on Sunday morning.

His fans joined the funeral procession to honour the legendary footballer in Baghdad today.

In the video footage released on Iraqi media outlets, dozens of men were seen gathered around an ambulance, chanting “There is no God but Allah” in Arabic. Others were seen crying in sadness.

FIFA wrote on Twitter, “Scorer of Iraq’s only #WorldCup goal, Voted Asia’s best player in 1988, 62 goals in 121 internationals, 9th on the IFFHS’s Asian Player of the Century ranking.

Football lost a legend today. RIP Ahmed Radhi.”
