The Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) lost more than Rs 28 billion in aeronautical charges due to the closure and reduction of international air operations due to the coronavirus.

This was stated by CAA Senior Joint Secretary Aviation Division and Spokesperson Abdul Sattar Khokhar.

He said that the total loss of the company during the 4 months till July 15 exceeded Rs. 30.50 billion.

He said that the Civil Aviation Authority was losing more than Rs. 200 million a day in terms of aeronautical charges due to the shortage of international flights.

He said that the CAA was facing a loss of more than Rs1.2 billion every week till the complete restoration of international flights.

He said that coronavirus has also reduced overflying in Pakistan’s airspace.

He said that more than one thousand daily flights used to pass through Pakistan’s airspace which has now been reduced to 22 to 25 per cent.

Abdul Sattar Khokhar said that “the reduction in overflying is causing a loss of one thousand dollars per flight. The coronavirus has affected the country’s aviation industry as well as the rest of the world.”

It should be noted that the aviation industry around the world has been badly affected due to travel restrictions imposed due to coronavirus.

Earlier this month, Emirati Airlines, the largest airline in the Middle East, announced that it would lay off 9,000 employees due to the coronavirus.

Emirates Airlines has already laid off 10% of its workforce.

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) says epidemics have cost airlines 84 84 billion a year, the biggest threat in the industry’s history.
