The Turkish parliament has passed a law to regulate social media in order to gain control over it.

According to the foreign news agency, under the law, the authorities will have extraordinary powers to regulate social media instead of censorship.

Under the new law, from now on, under the social media law, major social media companies such as Facebook and Twitter will have to open offices in Turkey and appoint representatives to deal with content-related complaints.

If a social media company refuses to appoint a local representative, the law provides for the company to be fined.

The bandwidth of the company will also be reduced, including the ban on advertisements. In addition, the bandwidth will be reduced by 50 to 90% through a court decision.

Remember that a reduction in bandwidth means that social media networks will be much slower to use.

Under the bill, representatives of social media companies will have 48 hours to respond to requests for violations of content privacy and consumer rights.

If such content is blocked or not removed within 24 hours, the company will have to compensate for the loss, while under the amended law, social media companies will also have to protect user data in Turkey.
