The government agency for the protection of children’s rights in India has demanded the immediate closure of the new web series ‘Bombay Begums’ of streaming website Netflix after receiving complaints about the content.

In a letter to Netflix, the National Commission for the Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) asked the US streaming company to investigate the matter and submit a report within 24 hours or take further action, according to Internal news agency Reuters.

The NCPCR notice cited a tweet in which a user objected to a scene of ‘children taking cocaine’.

The commission said the web series based on such content would not only pollute the minds of children but could also lead to increased abuse and exploitation of children.

However, when an Internal news agency contacted Netflix, there was no response.

The web series ‘Bombay Begums’ was released this week about 5 women from different walks of life who are trying to move forward in modern Mumbai which was earlier called Bombay.

Netflix and Amazon Prime’s streaming platforms have previously been the subject of controversy over pornography or insulting religious sentiments.

Last year, a member of India’s ruling party’s youth wing lodged a complaint with the police against Netflix for objecting to some scenes of ‘Suitable Boy’.

Amazon Prime recently faced controversy for insulting religious sentiments on the Tando web series.
